Reviewing the Amigo Bravo 12 Plus Horse Blanket

Living in Michigan, our winters can be relatively unpredictable and can get bitterly cold, so I decided to do a little bit of pre-Christmas shopping for Moose. As he gets older and becomes a harder keeper, I don’t want his body to have to work as hard to stay warm, therefore saving calories that he can’t really spare to burn due to his weight issues. For his first brand new blanket in a while, I knew exactly what I wanted in terms of denier, fill, and style but there are a ton of different brands out there (check out my Ultimate Guide to choosing a blanket here).

I have to stay, I spent a TON of time looking up different brands and prices. I was trying to get what he needed and stay within my budget, paying for quality and not just a brand name. I also needed something that was going to last a while with only some minor repairs because he's an outdoor horse with a lot of buddies. After much deliberation and a lot of research, I ended up getting him the Amigo Bravo 12 Plus Heavyweight 400g.

I was originally going to purchase this blanket straight from the manufacturer, which is Horseware, but I decided to check with my local tack store instead as the cold weather was closing in fast! I also felt like it was better to support my local tack store, the Covered Wagon in Oxford, Michigan (no commission for this mention, I just appreciate them!). They happened to have one left in his size for the same price (269.99 before tax), and they let me pay over the phone so I could swing by and pick it up! I packed my daughter up and we went adventuring to get Moose comfy and cozy for the winter.

Now for the good part:

Immediately upon opening the packaging I liked this blanket. It felt heavy but not so much that it was difficult to put on him and the material of the outer shell felt sturdy. It comes with a detachable heavyweight neck cover that is super easy to put on and take off. It has an awesome front closure with a combination of Velcro and heavy-duty clips that attach to an O-ring; there are three surcingle-latching belly straps, and a nice, long tail flap. I kind of fell in love as soon as I put it on him!

So far I have zero complaints about this blanket-quite the opposite, in fact. The waterproofing seems great and the fit (size 72) was just right. Horseware is a well-known brand in the equine world and their products have a great reputation. I’ve had Horseware Amigo mid-weight blankets and sheets before and loved them, so I’m not surprised that I love this heavyweight one, too. I went out to see Moose a week after putting this blanket on him and it still looks great. Dirty, but great!

You can tell he's been rolling in it and it's held up great, especially since he lives in a pasture with other horses, donkeys, and sometimes goats. One major thing I noticed about this blanket is that Moose was completely dry underneath, particularly by the area where the blanket and the detachable neck cover meet. This was a huge bonus for me to find out as that was my biggest concern when it came to the neck cover being detachable as opposed to one piece with the blanket. All in all, I'm incredibly happy with this purchase; it was definitely worth the investment. We’ll see how it holds up the rest of the winter!
